Materials & Care

Practical care and placement for lasting use.

Cast iron boot scrapers age gracefully outdoors when given basic care. Below you will find detailed guidance on cleaning, placement, rust prevention, and installation so your piece stays in good condition for years.

Wipe your boot scraper with a dry or lightly damp cloth to remove dirt and moisture. Avoid harsh chemicals. For a light protective layer, apply a thin coat of paste wax or dedicated metal wax once or twice a year. This helps slow oxidation and keeps the finish looking good.

Place the scraper on a level, stable surface such as a porch, step, or path. Ensure it will not tip when in use. If possible, choose a spot that gets some airflow to help surfaces dry after rain or snow. Avoid placing it in standing water.

Cast iron can develop a natural patina or light rust over time when left outdoors. To slow this, keep the piece dry when you can and apply wax as above. If surface rust appears, you can gently remove it with a soft brush and re-apply wax. Heavy rust may require light sanding and a new finish; contact us for guidance.

Freestanding scrapers need no installation; simply set them in place. For wall-mounted models, use the included hardware and fix the unit to a solid wall or post. Pre-drill if needed and ensure screws or anchors are suitable for the material. Check that the scraper is level and secure before use.
